Letting Go

I found this week’s read to be extremely intriguing and mind boggling. The article this week had ample relevance in education today. “Great Teaching Means Letting Go” written by Grant Wiggins in my opinion challenges many school districts/state curriculums. According to Wiggins, everywhere he goes he sees more scaffolding and prompted teaching. Are the students learning to be independent learners? Are they utilizing analytical and strategic thinking skills on a daily basis or are we spoon feeding them to memorize facts in order to gain success? It is ironic I read this article today because a colleague of mine just gave me an idea to have a “board game” day with my students weekly. We expressed how the students are using their strategic thinking skills enough and we are afraid that will impact them for life long learning. I know scaffolding in most education facilities is preferred, we have all heard of the “I do, We do, You do”. I have also watched colleagues and have had former ins...

Reflective Searching

I see myself as a pretty accurate researcher. As, I stated in my discussion posts I am known to my circle as the lady that can find anything at anytime using a search engine. Google is the only search engine I use (yes i'm apart of the "google generation"). I found the "Information Behavior of the Researcher of the Future" a very informative read. The article reached many valid points from which I agree. According to the text, the term "google generation" is a phrase given to young age people (born after 1993) or as I like to say "millenials". Yes, I am one of those millenials that's always on their phone, checking their social media, group chatting with friends, taking selfies, etc. Yes, I use my iPhone for everything, where to eat, how to get around my city, order food, etc. In agreement with the article, our information fluency skills have deteriorated because of the abundance of accessible information. I feel like growing up during...

The video "Infowhelm"and the article "My Daily Info-Wrangling" routine had a couple of main point similarities that grasped the eye. Both resources expressed relevance to information fluency and expressed the how us (humans) are bombarded with information- from our emails, texts, social media, television, etc. . The expectation of us to "learn" has evolved to simply memorization due to the fact that we are receiving so much information has created a different era of learning, which connects us to the next resource-" Creating Classrooms: 8 Ways into Inquiry Learning". These resources presented exposed the correlation between information fluency and inquiry learning. In my opinion, in order to have be predominately fluent in information we must teach students using inquiry based learning strategies. Understanding the concept of inquiry learning was one of my learning goals of this course and the article "Creating Classrooms: 8 Ways into Inquir...

My learning goals for this course will be utilized so that I can successfully implement new ideas in my 3rd grade classroom. My first goal is to gain knowledge of strategies to implement inquiry learning for elementary learners. I have some unstructured knowledge of inquiry learning but I will like to utilize it with rigor. Another learning goal will be to understand the relevance of digital learning models for K-5 students.
